Old Shoes

What is it about an old pair of shoes? I’m no hoarder, yet throwing away even the most decrepit pair seems like a betrayal. We patch them up and resole them until they scarcely deserve to be called shoes at all. Perhaps it’s because, unlike a shirt, we associate them with exertion. In short: they take us places. Most journeys have a soaking or scuff, and it is this shared history (without wanting to aggrandize things too much) that binds us to our shoes. The sadness of it all is that unless we wear Converse or John Lobb, the chances of ever finding the same pair again are very small. And the truth is an old shoe is always better than a new one.

Kurt Geiger | suede desert boots*

O'Neill | canvas plimsoll

Shipton & Heneage | brown suede half brogue

* the most comfortable shoes I own.
